Ashwagandha,
Withania somnifera is an Ayurvedic medicinal plant that belongs
to the Solanaceae family found throughout the drier parts of
India. The word Ashwagandha, sweaty horse, indicates the equine
odour of the plant. It is also called Indian ginseng
. Charaka, Indias ancient celebrated Ayurvedic physician
has described diverse medicinal uses of this plant and suggested
its application in many chronic diseases. Ashwagandha is prescribed
for all age groups and both sexes and even during pregnancy
without toxic side effects.
Ashwagandha extract is an effective preparation against anxiety
neurosis and stress and is prepared from the root of the plant
by alcohol extraction process.
